Meares and Demetri at the Blubber Stove in the Discovery Hut, 3 November 1911, (1913)
Meares and Demetri at the Blubber Stove in the Discovery Hut, 3 November 1911, (1913). Dog handlers Cecil Meares, smoking a pipe, and Dmitrii Gerof (or Girev), in the Discovery hut at Hut Point, cooking seal blubber to feed the sledge dogs. Boots and socks hangs from a line, boxes of biscuits are stacked against the walls. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Meares and Demetri at the Blubber Stove in the Discovery Hut, 3 November 1911
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, taken during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), we are transported back to a pivotal moment in Antarctic exploration. Dog handlers Cecil Meares and Dmitrii Gerof find respite from the harsh conditions inside the Discovery Hut at Hut Point. As smoke billows from a crackling blubber stove, Meares leisurely puffs on his pipe while Demetri tends to cooking seal blubber for their loyal sledge dogs. The scene is filled with remnants of daily life in this desolate landscape - boots and socks hang on lines, boxes of biscuits are stacked against walls - testaments to their survival strategies. Scott's final expedition was driven by scientific curiosity and an unwavering determination to be the first to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts, they faced unimaginable challenges along their treacherous journey. Tragically, upon reaching their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there. Stranded by relentless blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their valiant efforts. This photograph serves as a haunting reminder of both their resilience in adversity and the ultimate sacrifice made in pursuit of scientific discovery. From "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I (Smith Elder & Co. , London, 1913), this image offers us a glimpse into history - an enduring testament to human ambition amidst nature's unforgiving embrace.
