Meares and Demetri with Their Dog Teams Leaving Hut Point, c1911, (1913). Artist

Meares and Demetri with Their Dog Teams Leaving Hut Point, c1911, (1913). Dog handlers Cecil Meares and Dmitrii Gerof (or Girev). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Meares and Demetri with Their Dog Teams Leaving Hut Point, c1911" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In this image, dog handlers Cecil Meares and Dmitrii Gerof can be seen leading their teams of loyal sled dogs away from Hut Point. Taken in 1911 as part of the Terra Nova Expedition, this photograph symbolizes the determination and resilience of Scott's team. Comprising a diverse group of scientists and experts, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; they embarked on a mission to continue scientific research while also aiming to become the first to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies due to blizzards along the way; they were met with heartbreak. The Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had already achieved their objective one month prior. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and facing severe shortages in provisions during their return journey; Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - succumbed to exhaustion at the end of March that year. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered alongside poignant diaries documenting their struggles. This evocative print serves as a lasting testament to both the bravery exhibited by these explorers in pursuit of knowledge as well as a reminder of the harsh realities faced by those who venture into uncharted territories.
