EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in time - the meeting of King Wilhelm I and Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm at the Battle of Koniggratz on 3 July 1866. In this powerful image, we witness a father-son reunion amidst the chaos of war. King Wilhelm I, also known as Emperor of Germany, was an influential figure who reigned from 1797 to 1888. His son, Friedrich Wilhelm, would later become German Emperor and King of Prussia Frederick III. This meeting between them holds great significance as it symbolizes not only their familial bond but also their shared commitment to leading their country through turbulent times. The Battle of Koniggratz itself was a pivotal event during the Austro-Prussian War. Fought near Koniggratz in Bohemia (now Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic), it marked a decisive victory for the Kingdom of Prussia over the Austrian Empire. This remarkable photograph is part of "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" (Pictures of German History), No. 12 cigarette card album published by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst in Altona-Bahrenfeld, Hamburg, Germany in 1936. The image showcases exquisite color and detail that brings this historical moment to life. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are transported back to that fateful day when father and son stood together on the battlefield - two leaders united by blood and purpose amidst the turmoil of war. It serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication to their country and reminds us all of the sacrifices made for freedom and unity.
