The Meeting of His Royal Highness Prince Albert and the Emperor of the French, at Boulogne, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Meeting of His Royal Highness Prince Albert and the Emperor of the French, at Boulogne, 1854. Napoleon Bonaparte III welcomes Prince Albert to France. Prince Albert, recognising the Emperor, took off his hat and saluted his Majesty, who most gracefully returned the compliment...As soon as the gangway was made, his Royal Highness stepped hastily ashore, the Emperor advancing to the foot of the gangway to meet him. A most cordial shake of the hand was exchanged...The Prince was looking remarkably well, and wore the uniform of a Field Marshal...The Royal yacht was an object of vast interest and admiration...immediately after the Prince had landed, a very general rush was made by ladies and others to get on board. A company of tars, however, manfully resisted the attempt to board the Royal craft, and...forced the invaders to beat a retreat'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

This photograph captures the historic moment when His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha met Emperor Napoleon III of France at Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1854. The image, taken from the Illustrated London News, documents the cordial welcome extended by the French Emperor to his esteemed guest. As Prince Albert's ship approached the French shore, Napoleon III, recognizing the British monarch, extended a gracious hand in welcome. Prince Albert, in turn, doffed his hat in respect and returned the greeting. The Prince looked resplendent in the uniform of a Field Marshal, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. The Royal yacht, anchored in the background, was a sight to behold, drawing the admiration of onlookers. Immediately after the Prince's arrival, a throng of ladies and other spectators attempted to board the vessel. However, a determined company of French sailors successfully held them back, ensuring the safety and privacy of the royal party. This meeting marked a significant moment in Anglo-French relations, symbolizing a new era of peace and cooperation between the two nations. The cordial exchange between the two monarchs paved the way for improved diplomatic ties and set the stage for future collaborations.
