Mercury, the swift-footed messenger god of the Romans, is depicted as a youthful man with a winged cap and a staff in hand. He is seated beneath an oak tree, perhaps taking a moment of respite from his divine duties. Mercury's presence in this scene is significant, as he plays a crucial role in the mythological tale of Io. Io, a beautiful nymph, is shown as a naked woman, seated on the ground with her legs crossed. She is surrounded by various plants and trees, symbolizing her connection to nature. The god Jupiter, in the form of a bull, had fallen in love with Io and abducted her. Mercury was sent by Jupiter's wife, Juno, to save Io from Jupiter's advances. He was sent by Juno to guard Io, but Mercury successfully outwitted Argus, killing him with a single blow from a staff.
