Metal fittings, France and Germany, 18th century, (1898). Creator: Unknown

Metal fittings, France and Germany, 18th century, (1898). Figs 1-15: Metal mountings from casts in the collection of plaster casts in the Royal Technical Institute, Stuttgart....Here especially the great talent of Charles Cressent celebrated as sculptor, carver, and cabinet-maker comes into play, and his versatility was so great that he could impart to his work a uniform and very unusual charm...In the same way we find Jacques Caffieri, the famous sculptor, founder, and carver, at work on bronzes which he very tastefully applied to furniture, - probably in conjunction with Jean-Francois Oeben, the court cabinet-maker. The figures of our plate show a collection of bronze furniture mountings of the time of Louis XVI [c1774-1792], a time in which we are accustomed to see delicate decorations of a fanciful taste. To this period belongs the ornament in which swags and ribbons, doves, quivers, torches, and all kinds of trophies, are mingled into an agreeable and symbolic whole. Plate 86 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases metal fittings from the 18th century in France and Germany. The creator of this exquisite collection remains unknown, adding an air of mystery to these intricate designs. The photograph captures the essence of Charles Cressent's remarkable talent as a sculptor, carver, and cabinet-maker. His versatility shines through in each piece, exuding a uniform charm that is both striking and unusual. Another renowned artist featured in this print is Jacques Caffieri, celebrated for his skills as a sculptor, founder, and carver. Collaborating with Jean-Francois Oeben, the court cabinet-maker at the time, they tastefully applied bronzes to furniture pieces. The figures depicted in this plate display an array of bronze furniture mountings from the era of Louis XVI (c1774-1792). This period was known for its delicate decorations characterized by fanciful tastes. The ornamentation showcased here combines various elements such as swags and ribbons, doves, quivers, torches, and trophies into a harmonious and symbolic whole. These ornate details evoke a sense of elegance and grandeur associated with the artistic styles prevalent during that time. Plate 86 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from German author H. Dolmetsch's work provides us with valuable insights into these historical treasures. Preserved within the Royal Technical Institute's plaster cast collection in Stuttgart are casts used to create this stunning photographic representation. This print serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage preserved through artistry across different centuries and countries like France and Germany.
