A Mid-day Halt on the Rio Trombutas, Brazil, 1857. Creator: Unknown
A Mid-day Halt on the Rio Trombutas, Brazil, 1857. Among the experiences of the Colt revolver we know none more interesting than those of Mr. Catlin, the celebrated American explorer and sportsman, or more decisive as to its efficacy. While descending the River Trombutas...in a canoe, Catlin was in the habit of passing the mid-day heats under the shade on shore. One day he was roasting a wild hog for dinner and saw a large panther...playing with the legs of his companion who was asleep...Catlin went cautiously down for his revolver rifle which had been left in the boat. But the panther had put down his head...so Catlin giving a whistle, the panther raised his head just the height he wanted, and immediately received a ball between the eyes. That the sleeper, on awakening, was astonished at his simultaneous release from the arms of Morpheus and a panther, may be well believed'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

A Mid-day Halt on the Rio Trombetas, Brazil, 1857: An Exciting Encounter with a Panther This photograph, taken in 1857 along the shores of the Rio Trombetas in Brazil, depicts an intriguing moment in the adventurous life of the renowned American explorer and sportsman, George Catlin. The image, though unsigned, is an account of an event as recorded in the 'Illustrated London News' of that year. Catlin, a seasoned traveler, was known for his experiences with the Colt revolver, and this encounter is among the most fascinating. As the scorching midday sun beat down on the riverbank, Catlin, weary from his journey, took a break from his descent down the Rio Trombetas in a canoe. His customary practice during these halts was to seek refuge from the heat under the shade of the trees. On this particular day, Catlin was preparing a wild hog for dinner when he noticed a large panther playing with the legs of his companion, who was peacefully asleep nearby. Seizing the opportunity, Catlin went for his rifle, which he had left in the boat. However, the panther, unaware of Catlin's presence, had lowered its head to better savor the moment. Catlin whistled to alert the animal, and as it raised its head to locate the source of the sound, he took aim and fired, striking the panther between the eyes. The sleeper, startled by the commotion and the sudden release from the panther's grasp, was reportedly astonished by the unexpected turn of events. This photograph serves as a testament to the effectiveness of the Colt revolver and the quick thinking of the intrepid explorer, George Catlin.
