EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939, captures the harsh realities of migratory labor during the pea harvest in Brawley, Imperial Valley, California. The image, part of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) collection at the Library of Congress, depicts a makeshift camp where migrant workers, many of whom were displaced farmers themselves, sought temporary shelter during the harvest season. The scene is dominated by the stark contrast between the barren, rocky landscape and the rows of pea plants, which stretch out towards the horizon. In the foreground, a group of weary-looking pickers, some of whom are perched on old automobiles, are busy harvesting the peas. The cars, belonging to the Automobile Company, served as makeshift housing for the laborers, reflecting the desperate living conditions of the time. The Great Depression had left many families destitute, and the agricultural industry, particularly in California, offered a means of survival for countless migrant workers. The Congressional Library's Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned Lange to document the plight of these workers, and her powerful images brought national attention to their struggles. This photograph, with its haunting imagery and poignant social commentary, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It also serves as a reminder of the rich agricultural heritage of the United States and the essential role that migrant labor continues to play in the industry today.
