Moonlight in the Pack, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Moonlight in the Pack, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Moonlight in the Pack" by Herbert Ponting takes us back to the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott and his team embarked on the Terra Nova Expedition, aiming to reach the South Pole and continue their scientific research. This particular image captures a serene moment amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Bathed in ethereal moonlight, jagged ice formations rise from the frozen sea like mystical sculptures. The stillness of the scene is juxtaposed with an underlying sense of adventure and exploration. Scott's team consisted of experts from various fields, each contributing their expertise to this ambitious journey. They faced treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies but pressed on towards their goal. However, upon reaching the South Pole on January 17th, 1912, they were met with disappointment as Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically, delayed by adverse weather conditions and running out of provisions during their return journey, Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March that same year. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries documenting their valiant efforts. "Moonlight in the Pack" serves as a haunting reminder of both human resilience in pursuit of knowledge and nature's unforgiving power. It immortalizes a pivotal moment in history when brave explorers pushed boundaries despite insurmountable odds - forever etching their names into our collective memory.
