One of the Motor Sledges, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

One of the Motor Sledges, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "One of the Motor Sledges, 1911" by Herbert Ponting takes us back to the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1911. The Terra Nova Expedition was a remarkable endeavor that aimed to conduct scientific research and reach the South Pole for the first time. Led by Scott, this diverse team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Their mission was not only an exploration but also a continuation of Scott's previous scientific work during his Discovery Expedition. The photograph showcases one of the motor sledges used during their journey across treacherous icy terrains. These vehicles played a crucial role in transporting supplies and equipment through harsh conditions. They were essential for their ambitious goal of reaching the geographic South Pole. However, upon arriving on January 17th, 1912 after enduring blizzards and dwindling resources along the way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them to their objective by a month. Tragically delayed and facing insurmountable challenges ahead with limited supplies left; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were eventually found eight months later – testament to their unwavering determination in pursuit of knowledge and discovery amidst unforgiving circumstances. This poignant image serves as a reminder of their extraordinary bravery and sacrifice in pushing boundaries beyond human limits for scientific advancement.
