On the opposite coast is the crescent-shaped city of Messina; with Mount Etna on its right, and a little above it, on its left, the low promontory of Faro, with its tower advancing into the sea, as though to meet the Italian coast; whilst dimly seen in the distance is the little fiery rock Stromboli, forming a splendid landscape, one of the finest even in the Mediterranean, a sea whose shores are remarkable for a variety of beautiful scenery'.
