"My Last Look at Sicily", taken by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, from the coast of Calabria, between Reggio and St. Giovanni, 1860. The view herefrom is exceedingly fine. On the opposite coast is the crescent-shaped city of Messina; with Mount Etna on its right, and a little above it, on its left, the low promontory of Faro, with its tower advancing into the sea, as though to meet the Italian coast; whilst dimly seen in the distance is the little fiery rock Stromboli, forming a splendid landscape, one of the finest even in the Mediterranean, a sea whose shores are remarkable for a variety of beautiful scenery'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

My Last Look at Sicily,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating photograph captured by the skilled artist, Frank Vizetelly, in 1860 from the coast of Calabria between Reggio and St. Giovanni. The image, published in the "Illustrated London News," offers a breathtaking panorama of the Mediterranean Sea, with Sicily bidding farewell to the artist as he sets sail. The scene is a visual feast for the eyes. On the opposite coast lies the crescent-shaped city of Messina, graced by the majestic presence of Mount Etna on its right. Above Etna, the low promontory of Faro stands proudly, its tower reaching out to meet the Italian coast. In the distance, the little fiery rock of Stromboli emerges, adding a splendid touch to this landscape, one of the finest even in the Mediterranean. The geographical features in this photograph are a testament to the richness and diversity of the region. Mount Etna, an active volcano, is a symbol of the raw power of nature. The Straits of Messina, the narrowest part of the Mediterranean Sea, add to the intrigue, as they have been a significant trade route for centuries. The photograph captures the essence of the 19th century, an era of exploration and discovery. The sailing ships in the foreground, with their sails full of wind, symbolize the era's spirit of adventure and the importance of water transport in trade and transportation. Frank Vizetelly, a British artist, masterfully captured the beauty and grandeur of this scene, leaving us with a lasting impression of Sicily and the Mediterranean Sea. This photograph is a reminder of the rich cultural and geographical heritage that the region offers, making it a must-see destination for travelers and history enthusiasts alike.
