Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

Nerchinsk Tungus, 1862
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating ethnographic image captured by the skilled lens of Karlis Huns as part of the extensive "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) project. Commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the Russian Empire, this two-volume work was published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The image, taken from Sheet 55 of Volume 1, showcases the Nerchinsk Tungus people, who were among the numerous ethnic groups inhabiting the vast Russian Empire during the mid-19th century. The album consists of 62 colored illustrations, including this one, which offer a visual representation of the diverse population and their traditional attire. Volume 1 is particularly noteworthy for its fold-out table, which lists the various ethnic groups and their populations in cities across the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that delineates the territories inhabited by each group. The text-only Volume 2 provides comprehensive essays on the history, culture, language, and other aspects of the ethnic groups of the empire, reflecting the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the time. Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia, was the mastermind behind this groundbreaking work. His dedication and meticulous research resulted in a valuable record of the rich cultural heritage of the Russian Empire during the 1860s. This photograph of the Nerchinsk Tungus people serves as a testament to the importance of ethnographic documentation and the enduring value of preserving cultural traditions.
