The new cancer hospital at Brompton, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The new cancer hospital at Brompton, [London], 1862. Some twelve years back Dr. Marsden determined to establish a hospital for the treatment of cancer...Generous diet, medical skill, and unceasing kindness to the patients have mitigated the sufferings and arrested the progress of this complaint, while intelligent observation of the disease in all its stages has enabled the medical staff to obtain such a mass of information that there is every reason to believe that cancer, hitherto considered incurable, will shortly be so well understood that, like most other diseases, it will become subject to control by the intelligent application of medical skill...The arrangements of the buildings have been successfully planned and carried out by the contractors, Messrs. Lawrence and Sons, of Pitfield Wharf, under the superintendence of the architects, Messrs. Young and Son, of King-street, Cheapside'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases The New Cancer Hospital at Brompton in London, established in 1862. Twelve years prior, Dr. Marsden made a commitment to founding a specialized hospital dedicated to the treatment of cancer, a disease long believed to be incurable. Generous dietary provisions, compassionate care, and advanced medical knowledge were the cornerstones of this innovative institution. The patients' suffering was significantly alleviated, and the progression of the disease was arrested, thanks to the dedication of the medical staff. Intelligent observation and meticulous study of cancer in all its stages led to an unprecedented understanding of the disease, instilling hope that it would soon be manageable, much like other ailments, through the application of medical expertise. The architectural planning and execution of this groundbreaking hospital were carried out by Messrs. Lawrence and Sons of Pitfield Wharf, with the architectural guidance of Messrs. Young and Son of King-street, Cheapside. The successful collaboration between these visionaries and the medical team paved the way for a beacon of hope and progress in the fight against cancer.
