Nice, from the West, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Nice, from the West, 1854. The town of Nice on the French Riviera. Nice Maritime, now forming part of the Sardinian States, anciently appertained to the Counts of Provence...Numerous visitors, from all parts of Europe, but particularly from France and England, resort here for the winter season - viz. from the end of October till the middle of February, after which time piercing winds visit it from the south-east. The town lies in a bay, and is sheltered from the north by three ranges of hills and mountains...Crowning the high hill on the east of the town (shown in our Illustration), is the Fort Montalbano. From it is a superb view...The port admits vessels of from 200 to 300 tons...Furnished homes and lodgings are numerous and excellent...The climate is, perhaps, milder than that of any other town of Europe in the same latitude'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Nice, from the West, 1854: A Glimpse into the Past of the French Riviera's Premier Resort This image, taken from the west in 1854, offers a glimpse into the past of the enchanting town of Nice, located on the French Riviera. At the time, Nice was part of the Sardinian States, with a rich history that stretched back to the Counts of Provence. The town's popularity among European visitors, particularly the French and English, was already well-established, with many making the journey during the winter season from October to February, escaping the harsh northern climates. Nestled in a sheltered bay, Nice was protected from the north by three ranges of hills and mountains. The fortification atop the high hill on the east, Fort Montalbano, offered a superb view of the town and the Mediterranean Sea. The port was capable of accommodating vessels of up to 300 tons, making it an essential hub for trade and commerce. Furnished homes and lodgings were plentiful and of excellent quality, catering to the growing number of tourists. The climate, milder than that of any other town in Europe in the same latitude, added to the town's allure. This 19th-century black and white print, published in the Illustrated London News, showcases the beauty and charm of Nice, a popular destination for travelers seeking relaxation and rejuvenation by the Mediterranean Sea.
