The nobles plucked red or white roses and put them in their caps, 15th century, (1905). Artist: As Forrest

One after another all the nobles plucked red or white roses and put them in their caps, 15th century, (1905). The founding of the Houses of York and Lancaster; Richard, Duke of York, and Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset, pluck roses in the Temple gardens in London. The white rose came to represent York, and the red Lancaster. Illustration from Our Island Story by H E Marshall, published by T C & E C Jack Ltd, (London and Edinburgh, 1905). The book gave a very biased and pro-British view of history

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 15th century, a time of great political turmoil and rivalry in England. The image depicts a significant moment in history - the founding of the Houses of York and Lancaster. As Forrest, the talented artist behind this masterpiece, skillfully captures the essence of that era. We find ourselves amidst the lush gardens of Temple in London, where two noble figures stand side by side. Richard, Duke of York and Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset can be seen plucking roses from vibrant bushes. Each nobleman carefully selects either a red or white rose and places it proudly in their caps. This seemingly simple act holds immense symbolic significance. The white rose becomes synonymous with House York while the red represents House Lancaster - marking them as enemies during what would later be known as "The Wars of Roses". As we gaze upon this scene through As Forrest's lens, we witness not only an artistic representation but also a historical turning point. It is worth noting that this illustration originates from H E Marshall's book titled "Our Island Story" published in 1905. However, it is important to acknowledge that Marshall's work was heavily biased towards British history. Nevertheless, regardless of any potential bias present within its pages, this particular image remains an evocative portrayal encapsulating medieval England's complex dynamics and ongoing power struggles between rival factions.
