EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Nomadic Gilyak, 1865-1871," is a striking image from the extensive collection of 154 photographs taken by the local photographer V.V. Lanin in the Amur region during the late 1860s and early 1870s. The photograph showcases a determined and focused Gilyak man, an indigenous people of the Far East, who gazes directly at the camera with a pipe clenched between his teeth. His traditional clothing, including a fur coat and boots, is a testament to the harsh climate and nomadic lifestyle of his people. The image captures the essence of the meeting of frontiers, as the man's traditional attire contrasts with the modern technology of the camera. The photograph is a valuable contribution to the ethnographic and anthropological records of the time, providing a glimpse into the lives and cultures of the indigenous peoples of the region. The photograph is a full-length portrait, taken in a natural setting, and the man's direct gaze and determined expression add to the sense of authenticity and historical significance. This image is a valuable addition to any collection of historic photography, and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Far East during the 19th century.
