EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Nymphaeum in Jerash, Jordan. With a history dating back to the Bronze Age, this Greco-Roman city of Gerasa (Jerash) flourished in the 2nd century BC and became one of the renowned Decapolis cities in Syria and Palestine. In 63 BC, it transformed into a Roman city within the province of Syria until its devastating destruction by an earthquake in 749. The excavation efforts initiated in the 1920s have uncovered extensive ruins that offer us a glimpse into this ancient civilization's grandeur. The Nymphaeum itself stands as a testament to their devotion to nymphs associated with springs. Erected in 191 AD, this monument exudes architectural brilliance with its towering columns and intricate design. As we marvel at this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back centuries ago when religion played a significant role in daily life. The ruins surrounding the Nymphaeum remind us of how faith intertwined with every aspect of society during that era. Vivienne Sharp expertly captures not only the physical remnants but also evokes emotions through her lens. Her skillful use of color brings vibrancy to these ancient stones while emphasizing their weathered beauty. Let this image serve as an invitation for exploration and reflection on our shared human heritage—a reminder that even amidst ruin, traces of past civilizations can still inspire awe and wonder today.
