EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of off-white oxford shoes worn by the legendary Cab Calloway, a prominent figure in mid to late 20th-century African-American jazz culture. These exquisite men's shoes were created by Capezio, known for their exceptional craftsmanship and style. The uppers of these shoes are crafted from luxurious off-white leather, featuring a classic plain oxford vamp and closed lacing. The brown leather soles boast a stacked heel, adding an elegant touch to the overall design. Tied with off-white cotton shoelaces adorned with metal aglets, they form a charming bow over the tongue. Upon closer inspection, one can find gold text stamped on the off-white insole that proudly reads "ON-STAGE Fashion / by CAPEZIO / NEW YORK CHICAGO HOLLYWOOD / MAN-MADE INNERSOLE & SOCK LINING". Additionally, handwritten black ink markings inside both shoes indicate their size as "9 1/2 B" and bear the serial number "7470". These remarkable shoes not only represent Calloway's impeccable sense of style but also serve as artifacts reflecting his immense contribution to American jazz music and dance. As part of our cultural heritage preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this object symbolizes an era when Cab Calloway graced renowned venues like Cotton Club with his electrifying performances. Through this print captured by Heritage Images, we are reminded of Calloway's enduring legacy and his significant impact on shaping America's rich artistic landscape during the 20th century.
