FIFA ordered the match to be replayed and the Peruvians refused to do so, withdrawing their entire Olympic team in protest. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Peruvian Olympic football team in action during the Berlin Olympics of 1936. However, behind this seemingly ordinary moment lies an astonishing controversy that unfolded during their journey in the tournament. After defeating Austria, who would eventually claim silver medals, in a hard-fought quarter-final match that went into extra time, chaos ensued. The Austrians protested vehemently against alleged assaults by Peruvian players and even claimed that a spectator had invaded the pitch brandishing a revolver. In response to these serious accusations, FIFA made a controversial decision: ordering the match to be replayed. Yet, rather than complying with this ruling, Peru took a bold stand and refused to participate in the rematch altogether. This act of defiance led to significant repercussions both on and off the field. Riots erupted back home in Peru as protesters expressed their outrage at what they perceived as injustice towards their national team. The German consulate became a target for stone-throwing demonstrators seeking retribution for what they believed was biased treatment. As we gaze upon this historic image from Olympia 1936 - Die Olympischen Spiele 1936 - Volume II captured by an unknown creator and preserved by Heritage Images, we are reminded not only of athletic prowess but also of how sports can become entangled with politics and ignite passionate reactions among fans worldwide.
