Orpheus, c. 1903-1910. Creator: Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916)
Orpheus, c. 1903-1910. Redons oeuvre can be roughly divided into two sections: the black works of his early career--when he used charcoal and lithography--and the coloured works of his mature period--when, prompted by a yearning for colour, he transitioned to pastel and oil painting. As a drawing material, pastel is similar to charcoal; both are capable of rendering sharp lines and dense forms, as well as diffused edges and powdery evanescence. Here, Redon utilized the velvety tones of pastel to create an image of hypnotic suggestiveness. The head of the poet and musician Orpheus floats on his lyre down the River Hebrus, while a glittering Mount Parnassus--the home of Apollo and the Muses--soars heavenward

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Odilon Redon's masterpiece, "Orpheus" created between 1903 and 1910. Redon, a renowned French artist of the late 19th and early 20th century, divided his oeuvre into two distinct periods: the black works of his early career and the colored works of his mature period. In this particular piece, Redon skillfully employed pastel as a drawing material to convey an image that exudes hypnotic suggestiveness. The ethereal head of Orpheus, the mythical poet and musician, gracefully floats on his lyre down the mystical River Hebrus. The velvety tones achieved through pastel bring forth both sharp lines and dense forms while also creating diffused edges with a powdery evanescence. As our gaze is drawn towards Orpheus' mesmerizing presence, we are transported to Mount Parnassus in all its glittering splendor. Mount Parnassus serves as an emblematic symbol for Apollo and the Muses—a celestial abode where creativity thrives. Its majestic ascent towards heaven adds another layer of enchantment to this remarkable artwork. Through this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images from The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any commercial use), we are invited to immerse ourselves in Redon's mastery of color and form. It is a testament to his artistic evolution from charcoal and lithography during his early years to embracing pastel and oil
