Otto von Guericke, German inventor, engineer and physicist, 1672
Otto von Guericke, German inventor, engineer and physicist, 1672. Portrait from his Eperimenta Nova, ut vocant, Magdeburgica, de vacuo Spatio (New Magdeburgian Experiments, as they are called, relating to a Vacuum), (Amsterdam, 1672), in which he published details of his invention of the air pump (1650), and his experiments on the power of air pressure. In the most famous of these, he used an air-pump to remove the air from between two large close-fitting copper hemispheres, known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The effect of the air pressure on the two hemispheres was such that two teams of 8 horses could not separate them. Once the air was let back into the enclosure, however, the hemispheres were parted easily

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Otto von Guericke, a renowned German inventor, engineer, and physicist. The portrait is taken from his groundbreaking publication "Eperimenta Nova, ut vocant, Magdeburgica, de vacuo Spatio" in 1672. In this book, he meticulously detailed his invention of the air pump in 1650 and conducted various experiments on the power of air pressure. One of von Guericke's most famous experiments involved using an air pump to eliminate the air between two large copper hemispheres known as Magdeburg hemispheres. The astonishing result was that even two teams of eight horses were unable to separate them due to the immense force exerted by the trapped air pressure. However, once the enclosure was reintroduced with air, the hemispheres effortlessly parted ways. This image not only captures von Guericke's scientific brilliance but also reflects his significant contributions to physics and pneumatic apparatus during the 17th century. It serves as a testament to his pioneering spirit and relentless pursuit of knowledge. Preserved within this monochrome portrait is a glimpse into Germany's rich scientific heritage and its impact on advancements in various fields. Otto von Guericke stands tall among great minds who have shaped our understanding of science throughout history.
