An Outlet Glacier Valley Completely Filled With Ice. Looking Up The Ferrar Glacier to the South-West, c1911, (1913). Landmarks: Descent Pass, Cathedra Rocks. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of an outlet glacier valley completely filled with ice. Taken by artist Frank Debenham in 1911, this image showcases the stunning landscape of the Antarctic during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was a scientific endeavor led by Scott to explore and study the vast icy continent. The team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Scott's ultimate goal was to be the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, they were devastated to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were discovered eight months later. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913. It serves as a poignant reminder of both the incredible bravery exhibited by these explorers and their tragic fate in pursuit of scientific discovery in one of Earth's most extreme environments.
