Pantheon, Oxford Street, London, early 19th century. Artist: J Hinchcliff

Pantheon, Oxford Street, London, early 19th century. The Pantheon was a place of entertainment designed by James Wyatt that opened in 1772. It was rebuilt after burning down in 1792, but ended its days as an entertainment venue in 1814. In 1833-1834 Sidney Smirke converted the building into a bazaar. It was used by W and A Gilbey, wine merchants, as offices and a showroom from 1867 until 1937, when it was demolished to make way for the Oxford Street branch of Marks and Spencer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Pantheon on Oxford Street in London during the early 19th century. Designed by James Wyatt, this iconic entertainment venue opened its doors in 1772 and became a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Although it suffered from a devastating fire in 1792, it was rebuilt to even greater splendor. However, its days as an entertainment hub came to an end in 1814. In 1833-1834, Sidney Smirke transformed the building into a bustling bazaar, attracting shoppers with its unique offerings. Later on, W and A Gilbey repurposed it as offices and a showroom for their renowned wine business from 1867 until its eventual demolition in 1937. The photo showcases the architectural features of the Pantheon's portico, highlighting its elegance and craftsmanship. The surrounding area is filled with horse-drawn carriages navigating through traffic along Oxford Street—a bustling thoroughfare that has retained its prominence throughout history. Preserved through this engraving by J Hinchcliff under the guidance of Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and James Wyatt's vision, this image offers us a glimpse into London's past. It serves as a reminder of how buildings evolve over time to meet changing needs while still leaving an indelible mark on our collective memory.
