Petty Officer Crean (Who received the Albert Medal), 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Petty Officer Crean (Who received the Albert Medal), 1911, (1913). Tom Crean (1877-1938) in sledging outfit, holding skis and ski poles and smoking a pipe. He was awarded the Albert Medal for rescuing fellow expedition members Edward Evans and William Lashly. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Petty Officer Tom Crean, a heroic figure who received the prestigious Albert Medal in 1911. Taken by renowned artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, the image portrays Crean dressed in his sledging outfit, holding skis and ski poles while enjoying a leisurely pipe smoke. Crean's remarkable bravery and selflessness earned him the Albert Medal when he rescued fellow expedition members Edward Evans and William Lashly during the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In 1910, Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica with a diverse team of scientists including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, meteorologists, physicists and more. The mission aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Sadly for Scott and his team - which included Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - their efforts were thwarted as they arrived at their destination on January 17th only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott's group perished in late March. The bodies of these brave explorers were discovered eight months later along with their poignant diaries. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913 – an enduring testament to both human resilience and nature's unforgiving power.
