EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the enigmatic Phineas Taylor Barnum, an American showman whose name became synonymous with grandeur and spectacle. Taken around 1865, this image showcases a man who would go on to revolutionize the world of entertainment. Phineas Taylor Barnum's remarkable journey began long before his association with the famous Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. A visionary entrepreneur, he first made waves in 1842 by promoting General Tom Thumb, a diminutive entertainer who captured the hearts of audiences across America. However, it was in 1871 that PT Barnum truly cemented his legacy when he founded "The Greatest Show on Earth". At the age of 60, he embarked on a traveling circus extravaganza that captivated millions worldwide. With its dazzling array of performers and awe-inspiring acts, Barnum's circus became an unparalleled success. In this portrait, we see a determined yet charismatic man who possessed an uncanny ability to capture people's imaginations. His impact on American culture cannot be overstated; he transformed entertainment into an art form that continues to inspire generations today. As we gaze upon this historic photograph taken by Mathew Brady and featured in James D Horan's book "Historian with a Camera" we are reminded of Phineas Taylor Barnum's enduring legacy as one of history's greatest showmen.
