EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Pioneers of the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers in Rangoon, Burma, back in 1913. The Royal Munster Fusiliers, a distinguished infantry regiment of the British Army, had their roots deeply embedded in Ireland with their home depot located in Tralee. Originally formed by merging two regiments of the former East India Company in 1881, they served both in India and during World War I. The image showcases a group of proud men dressed immaculately in their uniforms, standing tall on the steps with an air of confidence and determination. Their faces reflect a sense of duty as they prepare to embark on what would become one of history's most significant conflicts. Rangoon (now known as Yangon) serves as the backdrop for this powerful portrait that symbolizes bravery and sacrifice. The lettering at the bottom adds an authentic touch to this monochrome masterpiece from early 20th century Burma. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, it is important to acknowledge that following Ireland's independence and establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, regrettably these five regiments were disbanded due to changes brought about by political circumstances. This print not only commemorates those who bravely fought but also stands as a testament to the rich history shared between Britain and its colonies during times marked by conflict and change.
