Plan and arrangements of the rifle-shooting contest on Wimbledon Common, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Plan and arrangements of the rifle-shooting contest on Wimbledon Common, 1860. National Rifle Association event in London. There were ten pairs of targets on the ground, each pair supported by a butt of earth, the latter divided by a space of eighty yards. The ranges varied from 200 to 1000 yards. At the lesser distances the targets are six feet by two feet, with a bull's-eye of eight inches; and at the greater ranges the targets are six feet square, with a two-feet centre and no bull's-eye. The following code of signals has been adopted: When a bull's-eye is hit, a red and white flag is shown and three points are scored; when a centre is hit, a dark blue flag is shown, and two points are scored: when an outer - that is, the target outside the centre - is struck, a white flag is shown, and one point is scored...the various competitors of the day were drawn up in line in the vicinity of the Royal marquee, the ground between which and the Queen's shooting-tent was lined, at short intervals, by a deputation of some sixty Swiss riflemen, twenty of whom have come over from their native valleys to compete for the prizes offered by the association, the remainder being residents in London, but proficients in the use of their national weapon'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the meticulous planning and organization of the rifle-shooting contest held on Wimbledon Common in 1860. The National Rifle Association event in London attracted a large crowd, with ten pairs of targets set up on the ground, each supported by an earthen butt. The ranges varied from 200 to 1000 yards, with targets measuring six feet by two feet at the lesser distances and six feet square at the greater ranges. The bull's-eye, a crucial target for maximum points, measured eight inches at the closer ranges, while the targets at greater distances had a two-feet centre with no bull's-eye. A specific code of signals was adopted for this competition. When a bull's-eye was hit, a red and white flag was shown, awarding three points. A dark blue flag signaled a centre hit, worth two points, and a white flag indicated an outer hit, granting one point. The competitors, eagerly anticipating their turn, were lined up near the Royal marquee. The ground between the marquee and the Queen's shooting-tent was guarded by a contingent of sixty Swiss riflemen, twenty of whom had traveled from their homeland to participate in the contest, while the remaining twenty were London residents proficient in the use of their national weapon. This fascinating snapshot from the past, taken from the pages of the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, offers a glimpse into the rich history of rifle shooting competitions and the meticulous planning and organization required to stage such events.
