Plan of Hut, c1910–1913, (1913)
Plan of Hut, c1910– 1913, (1913). Diagram showing that class distinctions were still maintained despite the difficult conditions, with separate officers and mens quarters. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Plan of Hut, c1910–1913" provides a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Despite the harsh environment, class distinctions were still maintained as depicted in this diagram. The separate officers and men's quarters highlight the social hierarchy that persisted even in such difficult circumstances. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious scientific endeavor led by Scott. Comprising a diverse team including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others. Their mission aimed to continue the scientific work initiated during Scott's previous Discovery Expedition to Antarctica from 1901-04 while also striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies along their journey towards their objective –the South Pole– Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by adverse weather conditions and running out of provisions on their return journey, the entire remaining team perished at the end of March. Scott's body along with those of his comrades were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. This image is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith, Elder & Co. , providing a visual record of one of history's most daring explorations into Earth's icy wilderness.
