The Polar Partys Sledging Ration (Pemmican, biscuits, butter, cocoa, sugar and tea)
The Polar Partys Sledging Ration (Pemmican, biscuits, butter, cocoa, sugar and tea), 1911, (1913). Sledging ration for one man for one day. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Polar Party's Sledging Ration" during the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913. The image depicts a carefully arranged assortment of essential supplies, including pemmican, biscuits, butter, cocoa, sugar, and tea. These provisions were meticulously calculated to sustain one man for a single day in the harsh Antarctic conditions. Led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this final expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Alongside Scott were an esteemed team comprising a geologist, zoologist, surgeon, photographer, engineer, ski expert, meteorologist and physicist among others. On January 17th 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies due to unforeseen delays along their journey; Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their long-awaited destination - only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically affected by exhaustion and scarcity of resources on their return journey, the remaining members of Scott's party succumbed at the end of March. Their bodies and poignant diaries would not be discovered until eight months later. This evocative photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition", Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith, Elder & Co. , offering us a glimpse into the arduous yet awe-inspiring mission undertaken by these brave explorers who ventured into uncharted territories with unwavering determination.
