Ponies Tethered Out on the Sea-Ice, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Ponies Tethered Out on the Sea-Ice" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image showcases the harsh and unforgiving environment that these brave explorers faced. The Terra Nova Expedition was an ambitious endeavor that aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also reaching the elusive South Pole. Led by Scott, a team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and more embarked on this treacherous journey. In this particular photograph, ponies can be seen tethered out on the sea-ice. These animals played a crucial role in transporting supplies across vast distances during the expedition. The stark contrast between their small figures against the vast icy landscape serves as a reminder of both their vulnerability and resilience in such extreme conditions. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts, Scott's team arrived at the South Pole only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Hindered by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining companions perished in March 1912. This haunting image is part of "Scott's Last Expedition" series published in 1913. It not only immortalizes an important chapter in exploration history but also pays tribute to those who sacrificed everything for scientific discovery amidst one of Earth's harshest environments.
