Pony Takes Whisky, 8 February, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Pony Takes Whisky, 8 February, 1911, (1913). Expedition members give whisky to a pony which swam ashore. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Pony Takes Whisky" captures a poignant moment during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken on 8 February 1911 by artist Herbert Ponting, it showcases expedition members offering whisky to a pony that had bravely swum ashore. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), comprised a diverse team including scientists, engineers, and experts in various fields. Led by Scott, their mission was twofold: to continue scientific research initiated during the earlier Discovery Expedition and to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's team had beaten them by a month. Despite this setback and facing blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team pressed forward but tragically perished at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later, shedding light on their valiant efforts in extreme conditions. This photograph serves as a testament to both the camaraderie among expedition members and their unwavering determination in pursuing scientific knowledge amidst treacherous circumstances. Preserved within "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913; this image allows us to glimpse into an era of exploration where bravery clashed with nature's unforgiving forces.
