EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century oil on canvas portrait depicts Archduchess Maria Antonia of Austria, later known as Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. Born in 1755 in Vienna, Austria, she was the eldest daughter of Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa. In 1770, at the age of 14, Marie Antoinette was married to the future Louis XVI of France, then a mere boy of 15, in a bid to strengthen the alliance between the House of Habsburg and the House of Bourbon. The portrait showcases the young Marie Antoinette in all her regal beauty, with her elegant rococo attire, intricately styled hair, and piercing gaze. The painting captures the essence of the absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime, where the king and queen held supreme power over their subjects. Marie Antoinette's reign, however, was marked by extravagance and luxury, which fueled growing discontent among the French people. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, led to the fall of the Bourbon monarchy and the execution of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette by guillotine in 1793. The Terror that followed saw the deaths of thousands of aristocrats and other perceived enemies of the Revolution. Despite her controversial reign, Marie Antoinette remains a fascinating figure in world history, a symbol of the opulence and power of the Ancien Régime, and a tragic victim of the revolutionary fervor that swept through France. This anonymous portrait, with its captivating depiction of the young queen, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and intrigue of the French monarchy before its dramatic downfall.
