EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon (1635-1719), a prominent figure in the court of King Louis XIV of France. The painting, created by the renowned French artist Pierre Mignard (1612-1695) after 1694, is currently housed in the Collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Françoise d'Aubigné, also known as Madame de Maintenon, was a noblewoman who rose to prominence in the latter years of Louis XIV's reign. She was the king's second wife in a secret marriage, which remained undisclosed to the public until after Louis' death. Prior to her marriage to the king, she was known as Madame de Scarron and was the wife of the poet Jean-François Scarron. The portrait showcases the Marquise's elegant and refined appearance, with her dressed in the latest Baroque fashion. Her expressive eyes and subtle smile convey a sense of intelligence and confidence. The use of rich colors and intricate details in the painting reflect the opulence and grandeur of the Absolutist era in France. Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, reigned from 1643 until his death in 1715. His reign marked the height of the French monarchy's power and influence in Europe. The portrait of Madame de Maintenon serves as a testament to the aristocracy and nobility of the time, and the enduring allure of the French court during the Modern Age.
