EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait of King Louis XVI (1754-1793) was painted by the renowned Scottish artist, Alexander Roslin (1718-1793), between the years 1782 and 1783. The portrait is currently housed in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland, and provides a captivating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy during the late 18th century. Louis XVI, born Louis-Jean-Marie-Joseph, was the last King of France before the French Revolution. He was a member of the House of Bourbon and succeeded his grandfather, Louis XV, in 1774. This portrait, executed in oil on canvas during the height of the Rococo period, showcases the King's regal bearing and refined elegance. The portrait's background is adorned with intricate gold leaf and delicate floral motifs, reflecting the extravagance and wealth of the French aristocracy during the Ancien Régime. Louis XVI is depicted wearing the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, symbols of his high rank and power. However, this portrait also serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous events that were to unfold in French history. Just 11 years after this portrait was painted, Louis XVI was overthrown during the French Revolution and ultimately guillotined on January 21, 1793. The portrait now stands as a testament to the absolute power and opulence of the French monarchy during the waning years of the Ancien Régime, as well as a reminder of the dramatic and transformative period of French history that followed. The portrait's creator, Alexander Roslin, was a prominent figure in the European art scene, having studied under the famous French painter, Jean-Marc Nattier. Roslin's works were highly sought after by the European aristocracy, and this portrait of King Louis XVI is a prime example of his exceptional skill and talent.
