EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait of Władysław III of Poland, also known as Władysław the Younger or Władysław Jagiełło, was created by the Italian artist Marcello Bacciarelli between 1768 and 1771. The painting is an oil on copper masterpiece currently housed in the Collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland. Born in 1424, Władysław III was the youngest son of King Władysław II Jagiełło and Queen Sophia of Halshany. He became King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania in 1434, following the death of his elder brother, Sigismund I. However, his reign was short-lived as he died in battle against the Mongols in 1444, at the age of just 20. Bacciarelli's portrait captures the young king's regal presence and noble bearing. The artist employed the neoclassical style, which was popular in Italy during the late 18th century, to create an idealized image of Władysław III. The king is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe, adorned with gold and precious stones, and a crown on his head. His gaze is steady and confident, reflecting his leadership qualities. The portrait of Władysław III is a testament to Bacciarelli's artistic skill and the enduring legacy of the Polish monarch. It is a valuable addition to the Collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, which holds many other significant works of art and historical artifacts.
