Pressure on the Beardmore Below the Cloudmaker Mountain, c1911, (1913). Artist

Pressure on the Beardmore Below the Cloudmaker Mountain, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Pressure on the Beardmore Below the Cloudmaker Mountain" captures a pivotal moment in history during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. This image, taken in 1911 and later published in Scott's Last Expedition, Volume I, showcases the challenging conditions faced by Scott and his team as they ventured towards their ultimate goal of reaching the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition was a multidisciplinary endeavor, with experts from various fields joining forces to conduct scientific research in addition to aiming for geographical conquest. Led by Scott, this diverse group included geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Despite their determination and perseverance through treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies along the way, tragedy struck when they finally reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912. To their dismay, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. This haunting photograph serves as a testament to both human resilience and nature's unforgiving power. It stands as a poignant reminder of Captain Scott's unwavering spirit and sacrifice alongside Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans who tragically lost their lives at journey's end. Today it serves not only as an important historical document but also symbolizes bravery in pursuit of knowledge amidst extreme adversity.
