EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, featuring Prince George, the Prince of Wales and future King George V. Taken in 1890 by renowned photographers W&D Downey, this portrait showcases the young prince's direct gaze and regal presence. George V went on to become the king of Great Britain from 1910 to 1936, leaving an indelible mark on his country. His reign witnessed several notable events that shaped British history. In 1924, he appointed Ramsay MacDonald as Britain's first Labour Prime Minister, marking a significant milestone for social progress. Another groundbreaking initiative introduced by George V was broadcasting a Christmas message to the people in 1932. This tradition continues today with Queen Elizabeth II delivering her annual address to the nation during the festive season. Tragically, King George V succumbed to influenza on January 20th, 1936. He was succeeded by his eldest son Edward VIII. The House of Windsor mourned their beloved sovereign's passing but carried forward his legacy. This remarkable photograph is part of The Cabinet Portrait Gallery series published by Cassell and Company Limited in London, Paris, and Melbourne in 1890. It serves as a timeless reminder of an influential monarch who left an enduring impact on British society during his reign.
