EDITORS COMMENTS
Prince Maurice of Nassau (1567-1625), the eldest son of William the Silent, is depicted in this 17th-century print alongside his two brothers, Frederick V, Elector Palatine (1596-1632), and Ernest Casimir I, Count of Nassau-Dietz (1577-1632). The trio is shown on horseback, dressed in the height of Baroque fashion, with their retinues following behind. Frederick V, also known as Frederick the Winter King, is seen on the left, wearing a richly embroidered doublet and breeches, his hair swept back in a grand style. He was the husband of Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia, making him King of Bohemia from 1619 to 1620. In the center, Prince Maurice wears a dark suit with a white collar and cuffs, while his brother Ernest Casimir I, Count of Nassau-Dietz, is dressed in a lighter outfit, with a red coat and white breeches. Ernest Casimir I was the Stadtholder of Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe in the Dutch Republic. The print, a fine example of Dutch Baroque art, is attributed to a follower of Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (1589-1664), a renowned Dutch engraver and painter. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the clothing and animals in the print reflect the opulence and elegance of the aristocracy during the era. The three brothers, united in their regal attire, represent the powerful and influential Nassau family during the Dutch and Bohemian Empires. Their strong bond and shared heritage are captured in this striking image, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of historical art or European history.
