EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite portrait painting, Princess Maria Theresa of Savoy, later Countess of Artois, is depicted in the prime of her youth, around the age of 20. The painting, created by the renowned French artist Lié Louis Périn-Salbreux in 1776, is a stunning example of Rococo art. Maria Theresa, born in 1756, was the eldest daughter of Victor Amadeus III, Duke of Savoy, and his wife, Maria Antonia of Austria. In 1773, she was married to the future King Charles X of France, then the Duc d'Angouleme. The marriage was a strategic alliance between the House of Savoy and the House of Bourbon, aimed at strengthening the political ties between the two European powers. In this portrait, Maria Theresa is depicted wearing an elegant and intricately designed robe of deep blue velvet, adorned with gold embroidery and lace. Her hair is styled in the latest fashion, with loose curls cascading down her shoulders. Her expression is serene and composed, reflecting the grace and poise expected of a royal princess. The painting is currently housed in the Musee Cognacq-Jay in Paris, a museum renowned for its collection of 18th-century French art. The museum was founded in 1895 by the wealthy banker and art collector Paul Cognacq and his wife, Nélie Jacquemart. The couple's extensive collection of art, including this portrait of Princess Maria Theresa, was bequeathed to the French state upon their deaths and is now open to the public. This portrait of Princess Maria Theresa offers a glimpse into the opulence and elegance of the French court during the late 18th century, as well as the artistic skill of Lié Louis Périn-Salbreux, a master of the Rococo style.
