EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Proclamation To my people, issued on 17 March 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. The image showcases a cigarette card from the album "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" (Pictures of German History), published in 1936 by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst. In this powerful scene, we see a large crowd gathered in Breslau (present-day Wroclaw, Poland) to hear the king's call to arms against Napoleon. The atmosphere is charged with patriotism and determination as men and women eagerly listen to their monarch's words. A majestic horse stands beside the king, symbolizing strength and leadership. The creator of this remarkable photograph remains unknown, but its historical significance cannot be overlooked. It serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by Prussians and Germans during that time period and highlights their unity in fighting against foreign oppression. The image is rendered in stunning detail, capturing every expression on the faces within the crowd. It evokes emotions of pride, courage, and hope for a brighter future. This print truly encapsulates an important chapter in German history.
