EDITORS COMMENTS
Ramses II, also known as Rameses the Great or Ozymandias, gazes out from the temple carved into the cliffs of Abu Simbel in Egypt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dedicated to the Pharaoh and the god Ra-Horakty, this temple complex was built around 1300 BC during the 19th Dynasty. In the 20th century, as Lake Nasser threatened to inundate the site, an international effort was launched to relocate the temples to higher ground, a feat accomplished in 1968. In this image from 1984, taken by renowned photographer Ethel Davies, the massive statues of Ramses II and his queen Nefertari stand proudly, their intricate details and vibrant colors preserved for future generations to marvel at. The temple complex is a testament to the grandeur and power of ancient Egyptian royalty, with Ramses II, the Pharaoh of the Two Lands, depicted as a sovereign ruler and a devout servant of the gods. The temples of Abu Simbel continue to captivate visitors with their awe-inspiring size and intricate carvings, offering a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Egypt's ancient past.
