Recent additions to the Zoological Society's Collection, Regent's Park, 1864. Creator: Pearson

Recent additions to the Zoological Society's Collection, Regent's Park, [London], 1864. 'The whistling duck (Dendrocygna arborea), from Jamaica; and the little green bittern, from Para (Butorides virescens), do not differ materially from their well-known allies of the same groups in habits....[Specimens from a group of animals]...imported from various parts of the American continent, and the greater part of them represent species which had previously been brought alive to this country.... the society's [collection] of living animals...now embraces upwards of 1700 individuals from all parts of the world'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print captures the recent additions to the Zoological Society's Collection in Regent's Park, London, in 1864. The image showcases two fascinating bird species - the whistling duck from Jamaica and the little green bittern from Para. These birds, while not drastically different from their counterparts in terms of habits, are a valuable addition to the society's diverse collection. Imported from various parts of the American continent, these specimens represent species that had previously been brought alive to England. The Zoological Society's collection now boasts over 1700 individuals from all corners of the globe, making it a truly remarkable display of biodiversity. The intricate details captured by Pearson in this engraving provide a glimpse into the educational and scientific significance of zoological institutions during the 19th century. From newspapers like "Illustrated London News" to engraved prints like this one, these resources served as important tools for learning about exotic animals and expanding knowledge about wildlife. As we admire this historical snapshot of captive birds in captivity, we are reminded of the ongoing mission of zoos and conservation efforts to protect and preserve endangered species for future generations. This print is not just a piece of art but also a testament to our shared responsibility towards animal welfare and environmental stewardship.
