Remarkable Cirrus Clouds Over The Barne Glacier, 19 Dec 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
Remarkable Cirrus Clouds Over The Barne Glacier, 19 Dec 1911, (1913) by Herbert Ponting captures a moment of awe and beauty amidst the treacherous landscape of Antarctica. This print is a poignant reminder of the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova Expedition embarked on a daring journey to the South Pole in June 1910, with Scott's ambition to be the first to reach this elusive destination. Alongside him were a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. Their mission encompassed both scientific research and exploration. Ponting's photograph showcases ethereal cirrus clouds gracefully floating above the icy expanse of Barne Glacier. The delicate wisps contrast against the rugged terrain below, symbolizing both the fragile nature of human existence in such extreme conditions and the resilience required for survival. Tragically, upon reaching their goal on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to it. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey from disappointment at being second best turned into an epic struggle for survival. Ultimately succumbing to exhaustion and harsh weather conditions in March that year. This haunting image serves as a visual testament to their courage and determination in pursuing scientific knowledge while pushing boundaries in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments.
