EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by J.B. Hazard in 1856, showcases the intricately carved Reredos in the Restored Church of Bedminster, located in Bristol, England. The Reredos, a decorative screen behind an altar, is made of Caen stone and dates back to the 19th century. The lower stage of the screen is a simple arcading, surmounted by a band of quatrefoils. Above this stage, three large panels are displayed, each depicting alto-relievo representations of significant Christian events: the Nativity, Crucifixion, and Ascension of our Lord. The jamb columns and niches of the panels are adorned with rouge-royal marble from the Pyrenees, adding a striking contrast and relief to the statues within. This exquisite piece of art and interior decoration was featured in the Illustrated London News in 1856, showcasing the intricacy and craftsmanship of the time. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and religious significance of the Church of St John in Bristol.
