The Return of the Sun, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

The Return of the Sun, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Return of the Sun, c1911, (1913) captures a poignant moment in history as British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team embark on their final expedition. Led by Scott, this ambitious Terra Nova Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by a diverse group of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists among others; Scott's team set off from London on 1 June 1910. The photograph showcases Herbert Ponting's artistic prowess as he skillfully captures the awe-inspiring beauty of Antarctica bathed in sunlight. However, despite their valiant efforts and perseverance through treacherous conditions and blizzards that delayed them significantly; tragedy struck when they reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912. Heartbreakingly for Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already achieved this feat a month earlier. Running out of supplies and battling extreme weather conditions during their return journey led to the demise of Scott's entire team at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with their diaries which provided invaluable insights into their heroic struggle. This print serves as a reminder not only of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's extraordinary courage but also pays tribute to all those who risked everything in pursuit of scientific knowledge amidst some of Earth's harshest environments.
