The Revolution in Sicily - the Fight at the Bridge of Melazzo - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Revolution in Sicily - the Fight at the Bridge of Melazzo - from a sketch by T. Nast, 1860....it appears that in the main the Neapolitans stood on the defensive, firing from behind walls and all kinds of covers, and were slowly dislodged, the Sicilians losing heavily throughout. The fight lasted for fourteen hours in the heat of the day. Garibaldi's force, which was about 5000 men, had 750 dead and wounded...Passing the bridge which leads to the neck of the peninsula, there is an open space of a few hundred yards, with the sea to the right and some gardens to the left. Beyond the open space is a row of houses, which continues to the very gates of the town. Here the Neapolitans made a last effort to hold out, occupying the houses, concealing themselves behind some large boats drawn up on the beach, and, helped by their field artillery as well as by that from the castle, they checked our advance for a time...There was a great deal of hard fighting both on and under the bridge which leads to the neck of the peninsula, and here Captain (now Colonel) Peard, with his men, did good service...The battle of Melazzo took place on the 20th July, and on the 25th the citadel was evacuated by the Neapolitan troops'. The Revolution in Sicily - The Fight at the Bridge of Melazzo

EDITORS COMMENTS
- a captivating sketch by the renowned American caricaturist Thomas Nast, depicting a pivotal moment during the Sicilian Expedition of 1860. The scene unfolds at the Bridge of Melazzo, where Garibaldi's Thousand, a small volunteer army led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, clashed with the Neapolitan forces in their quest for Italian unification. The skirmish at the bridge marks a significant turning point in the battle. The Neapolitans, numbering around 5,000, had taken defensive positions behind walls and various covers, putting up a determined resistance. The Sicilians, with a force of approximately 5,000 men, suffered heavy losses, with 750 casualties. The sketch illustrates the open space leading to the neck of the peninsula, with the sea on the right and gardens on the left. Beyond this space lies a row of houses, which the Neapolitans occupied, using large boats drawn up on the beach as additional cover. They managed to delay the Sicilian advance with the help of their field artillery stationed both on the bridge and in the castle. The intense fighting around the bridge resulted in numerous casualties on both sides. Among the brave Sicilian soldiers, Captain Peard and his men distinguished themselves, contributing significantly to the eventual victory. The Battle of Melazzo took place on July 20, 1860, and by July 25, the Neapolitan troops had evacuated the citadel. This sketch offers a poignant glimpse into a crucial episode of Italian history, as the country moved towards its eventual unification.
