Rival Rogues, 1880 - A Satirical Snapshot of Political Corruption in the 19th Century

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print titled "Rival Rogues, 1880" by Joseph Swain takes us back to a pivotal moment in British political history. The image depicts Mr Punch, a popular character from the satirical magazine Punch, facing off against twin candidates representing the Conservative and Liberal Parties. The artwork is a reflection of the first Election Commission that followed the 1880 General Election. This commission opened at Macclesfield in October 1880 and revealed widespread bribery and corrupt practices within both parties during the election process. Swain's cartoonish portrayal highlights this corruption with clever symbolism. In this monochrome engraving, we see Mr Punch seated behind a desk cluttered with papers and documents—a clear representation of bureaucracy and political intrigue. The twin candidates stand before him wearing their respective party rosettes, dressed in traditional attire befitting statesmen of that era. Swain's caricature captures not only the physical resemblance between these two politicians but also their shared involvement in unethical practices. With his keen eye for satire, he exposes how both major parties were equally entangled in acts of bribery during this tumultuous period. As we gaze upon this heritage image partnership between John Tenniel and Joseph Swain, it serves as a reminder that corruption has long plagued politics throughout history. It prompts us to reflect on our own contemporary political landscape while appreciating how art can shed light on societal issues even after centuries have passed.
