Royal Academy Exhibition - "The Infant Academy", Sir Joshua Reynolds, 1850. London exhibition of painting. Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first President of the Royal Academy, [is] still the most eminent painter that England has as yet produced. The picture...was bequeathed by Sir Joshua to his friend Lord Palmerston...The picture is an admirable example of Sir Joshua's pencil. The grouping is good, the colour warm and harmonious, and the infantine character throughout such as Sir Joshua alone has succeeded in catching. It would sell, we believe, were it brought this week under the hammer of Messrs. Christie and Manson, for something like two thousand guineas'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Sir Joshua Reynolds' masterpiece, "The Infant Academy," which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1850. Sir Joshua Reynolds, the renowned British painter and the first President of the Royal Academy, is still considered the most distinguished artist England has produced. The painting was bequeathed to Reynolds' friend, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, who is seen admiring the artwork in this image. The Infant Academy is an exceptional representation of Reynolds' artistic skill. The grouping of the children is well-balanced, and the warm, harmonious colors bring a sense of liveliness and charm to the painting. The infantile character portrayed is a unique and captivating aspect of Reynolds' art, which he alone has mastered. The painting features a group of children gathered around an easel, with one child posing nude while another holds an ostrich feather fan. The children are dressed in 19th-century apparel, adding to the historical context of the artwork. Reynolds' use of a paintbrush and palette can be seen on the table, emphasizing the artistic process. This print was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a glimpse into the public's fascination with the art world and the prestigious Royal Academy Exhibition. The caption suggests that the painting would have fetched a significant price if it had been sold at auction during that time. The print offers a fascinating look into the past, showcasing the beauty and significance of Reynolds' work and the fashion of the era.
