EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning scarab, dating from the 18th to 26th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (approximately 1569-525 BCE), showcases intricate protective hieroglyphic inscriptions on its oval surface. The scarab is made of steatite, a type of mineral commonly used in ancient Egyptian art, and it has been given a modern brown color. The scarab's design features the image of the god Maahes, depicted as a powerful and fearsome deity with the body of a lion, the head of a baboon, and the solar disk and uraeus (the symbol of royal power) on his head. Maahes was the god of war, healing, and protection, making this scarab an important talisman for the ancient Egyptians. The inscriptions on the scarab are written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and read from left to right. The top inscription translates to "Belonging to Mizraim," while the bottom inscription reads "Protected by Maahis." The close-up image, set against a grey background, highlights the intricacy and beauty of this ancient artifact, which is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
