EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning scarab, a small round object carved from steatite with a green color added in modern times, is a testament to the artistic prowess of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom period. Dated to the 14th century BC and belonging to the 14th Dynasty, this artifact is believed to have been created during the reign of Pharaoh Seti I (also known as Sety I or Menmaatre Seti I). The obverse side of the scarab showcases the image of the pharaoh in profile, wearing the nemes headdress and a false beard, with the cartouche of his name inscribed above and below. The reverse side depicts the scarab beetle god Khepri, symbolizing rebirth and transformation, rolling a sun disk on its back. The intricate details of the carving, from the textured skin of the beetle to the delicate lines of the pharaoh's features, speak to the skill and artistry of the ancient Egyptian craftsmen. This scarab, now housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt and its enduring influence on the world.
